Last week, President Trump encouraged North Carolina voters to test their state’s election security. David and Sarah discuss how, exactly, someone commits voter fraud, and what voters need to know as we close in on this November’s election. But that’s not all: Sarah gives us the latest on the state of the race and how the Trump campaign lost its cash advantage. Plus, David has some thoughts on Tenet.

    Thanks for discussing voter fraud. That's the kind of topic that could use more dispassionate fact-based conversation. Perfect Dispatch topic. That said, I was surprised that you didn't discuss the possibility of non-citizens registering to vote, since that is what some on the right seem to fear. They don't always say that, but the fraud-prevention measures that they support (and that the left decry as racist voter suppression) seem to be directed at preventing fraudulent registration, not ballot box stuffing, etc.

    Just came here to say how WRONG you are, David, about putting "Dark Knight Rises" into ANY good move list. The movie makes the same mistake that SO many DC movies had (Green Lantern being my favorite example) - it gets the Character wrong. This is the mistake that Marvel DOESN'T make, BTW, in its movies.
    Bruce Wayne quits being Batman because Rachel dies, right? NO NO NO, never, nope, not gonna happen. Batman doesn't let tragedy destroy him (that's kind of his thing, right?) just like Hal Jordan doesn't give up (which is when the GL movie lost me - long before the Parallax "cloud" debacle).
    I'm disappointed in you, David. You've lost SIGNIFICANT geek cred.

        True story. I really hope David sees this. I need to see a coherent defense of the 3rd Nolan movie and David may be the only one that has a chance at even coming close.
        To be clear - "Batman Begins" is a damn good movie. "The Dark Knight" is probably THE BEST Batman movie (with Burton's "Batman" a VERY close 2nd, if only for the PERFECT job Keaton does portraying Bruce Wayne. I just think Nolan dropped the ball on part 3.

    I put this on TMD, but, thought it fit here also:

    As to the debates, I think they mostly won't matter,( I don't know how many people watch them, but, rarely have) and that those who are interested in seeing them will be people who are looking for a reason to vote for or against one or the other, and the experts keep saying there just aren't that many undecideds this time...

    I am just hoping for no TMOD event to make these two upcoming months even worse than they are already going to be

    I have now received three pieces in the mail asking me to request a mail-in ballot ( I am in OH), one from the State Dems, one from The Board of Elections, and one for the Secretary of State, and our state government is Republican, so at least here we are promoting it, plus many messages about how secure our system is, we have had no excuse absentee voting for years...I have voted this way for years and already asked for mine during the primaries...so, they kinda wasted all that time and postage...lol

    I would like to suggest a topic, either for a future Advisory Opinions discussion or a future issue of The Sweep: What happens if either Biden or Trump dies before the election? It is a rather morbid topic, but there is at least a chance one of the candidates could die in the next 6 or 7 weeks, especially given their ages and the current pandemic environment. This question is especially important given the number of voters who are expected to vote before election day. The parties' national committees certainly have mechanisms to nominate replacement candidates, but what happens to the votes already cast for the dead candidate? As I understand it, a few states have laws allowing people to retrieve their ballots and cast new votes in the event a candidate dies before the election, but my state doesn't and I don't think that can be done in most states. The odds of facing such a situation in real life are pretty slim, but I think it would be an interesting topic nonetheless.

    A little background on the Reagan/Mondale debates in 1984. It was a lesson on the perils of debate prep. In this case, the lesson was not to over-prep your candidate. Somebody in the Reagan campaign decided it would be better for him to bone up on facts and figures before the first debate. As a result, at the first debate, Reagan looked as if he was prepared for an algebra exam instead of debating Walter Mondale. Famously, in the next debate, the strategy shifted to "let Reagan be Reagan" and he regained his footing. We've been hearing the stratagem "Let [fill in the blank] be [fill in the blank] ever since."
    Incidentally, the topic of Minnesota in the podcast brings back memories of those days. Democrat Minnesotans like Hubert Humphrey and Walter Mondale were considered ultra-leftists. In 1984, Walter Mondale lost 49 of 50 states however, I would easily prefer him over Joe Biden or Donald Trump. I profoundly disagreed with him but, Mondale was much more sage than Joe Biden and infinitely more decent than Donald Trump.

    Sarah mention that Trump is playing defense, because he won the previous election, meaning he only has to replicate what he did in the last election to win. The President's victory was based on narrow victories in handful of states. Given the narrow margin between victory and defeat, the manner in which the Donald won in 2016 might not be replicable. To win the 2020, Trump will likely have to play more offense than most incumbents do. Unlike other sitting presidents, the current Commander In Chief will have to expand his base to make his reelection a more solid possibility. Is Trump expanding his base or is he just attempting to mobilizing his existing one? The Donald seems like he's executing the latter strategy to me.
