David, Sarah, the commenting community: A question came into my head as I listened to the first half of this podcast. Should the pro-life movement focus more or most of its resources on preventing abortion, through persuasion, cultural norms, alternative options, and less on trying to outlaw it?
I'm not well educated on either the pro-life or pro-choice movements. I've heard about them my entire life but never seriously studied them. I have no knowledge of how the resources of each side are allocated now.
I also don't have strong views either way. Not that I don't care. It's just never been a big part of my life. But I do come from the thought that a pregnancy to a teenage /young unwed woman can be devastating. The more children born to these women/girls, the more the cycle of poverty And misery continues. So I believe options should available. Abortion is currently one of those options and it seems highly unlikely that this option will be eliminated anytime soon - perhaps never in my lifetime.
So if it's going to exist, why not focus mainly on reducing its usage? Things that come to mind are: better education and cultural persuasion on contraception and abstinence. End the shunning and ostracizing that can occur when a girl gets pregnant. Instead provide more support, education, and encouragement of adoption after carrying to full term. More charitable resource support to young single mothers; helping them continue an education and provide for the baby. I'm no expert here so these are just ideas. There are likely others.
Can David, Sarah and the crHe rest of the dispatch community provide thoughts on this? Are resources being allocated appropriately already and I just don't know about it? All I ever hear about is the pro-life legal movement. Are significant resources being dedicated to reduce the cultural appeal of abortion? And I'm meaning serious efforts - well beyond gathering outside abortion clinic holding signs and yelling.
I'm genuinely curious.
